Yesterday my DVR stopped working. I got this message out there that said it was unavailable or had been disabled, contact your cable company. So I did. I called and they tried to send the box a message but that didn't work. So today a technician is coming out to see if he can get the DVR going again. If he can't, he'll have to replace the box which means that nearly 100 hours of movies, specials and TV episodes will be lost.
As I started to think about the possibility of losing all those good viewing hours, I realized that most of it will be on again: I have nearly 20 movies from HBO or Showtime or TCM that will probably be on again at some point (I detest watching movies with commercials since they just gut the heck out of them). Also the TV episodes will no doubt be on again, though it will make for a difficult season without the premieres of House and Heroes. There were two series that I don't know if I'll be able to retrieve again, both from PBS: Guns, Germs and Steel (based on Jared Diamond's book) and The Supreme Court.
The technician is coming between 1 and 4, and I don't know if I'll lose everything. But I've prepared myself and in some ways it's liberating. I won't feel as if I have all these things to watch right now, it won't be a burden to have so much to watch. Sometimes a fresh start is a good thing.
I found a quote that sums this all up rather nicely, and I leave it for you. It's by Mary Manin Morrissey: "Even though you may want to move forward in your life, you may have one foot on the brakes. In order to be free, we must learn how to let go. Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain your old pain. The energy it takes to hang onto the past is holding you back from a new life. What is it you would let go of today?"

Hi "DW",
Thanks for the comment on my blog!
It sounds like we're in similar situations--grad students looking for canine companions. I'm always so excited to find grad students who want a dog because the majority seem to say, "NO, I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR A DOG. RESEARCH, RAWWR!"
Where/what are you studying in Chicago?
Hi dw! Hopefully you won't lose all your shows. I know that Dad would die without the dvr, but Mom rarely uses it.
I think you can watch the season premiere of "Heroes" on nbc.com. As for the other shows/programs, check hulu.com.
Stubby xoxo
DW, honey....now THAT would be a cryin' shame. Good luck with all that!
Stubby, Hank, I did indeed lose all my DVRs. *sobs* I have already rerecorded two of the movies I had and I think I can schedule at least one more this week. I can watch Heroes online, but last week's House is nowhere yet and there are two PBS series that I was thrilled to find this summer and will probably not be lucky enough to find again in the next several years. *sigh* I'm trying to Let Go, but it's hard.
Hi Mica, I'm studying English Lit at Depaul in Lincoln Park. How about you? What are you studying?
check out www.hulu.com - The episode of House will be on 9/29/09.
DVR troubles! Nooooooo!
Also - If you're in chicago, and want a pug, you may want to contact Minnesota Pug Rescue. It's only a 6 hour car trip away! ;)
I know they recently had an influx of new rescues, some very young and all looking for their forever home.
Sorry your DVR is being a pain! Was this resolved??!
Hi Yoda and Brutus! Thanks for the info on House. I'll be DVRing tonight's ep (because I'm at class and won't be home) and then watching the premeire online tomorrow!! :)
Hi Heather and Walter. Thanks for the info on the Minnysoda Pugs! I'll check them out. I also recently found a pug rescue place in a suburb here, so I'll check them out too. I have one more short trip in early November before I want to consider bringing a little girl into my life. I don't want to have to board someone who's just arrived. :)
Thanks for your post, Nevis! I did get it resolved -- by getting a replacement box. Gotta figure out if there's a way to actually use the USB port that's on the front of the new box. ;)
Ha, I JUST figured out where Depaul is when my friend took us to Lincoln Park for dinner. (It's near the Pasta Bowl, right?)
I'm studying French linguistics at UofI in Champaign-Urbana. So fun. Not.
When do you think you'll get a pug friend?
Oh no that sucks! I htink the usb port is to attach an external hard drive so it gives you more space on the dvr or else you can transfer it over to your computer. You should be able to find most of that online, since you are in the states check out Hulu. :)
