Earth Day and Easter

It's spring, at least by the calendar, and by the amount of rain we've been having lately. It's all part of the cycle of our Mother Earth, isn't it? April showers bring May flowers they say. And this year a late Easter falls just after Earth Day, which is today. It's a time of renewal, Easter is. Of rebirth. And just like the renewal of life in spring, we can all renew our commitment to the planet. There are little things you can do, and big things you can do, but it's important to do something. Thanks to Angel Stubby we all became more aware of our impact on our world, and with the 'Green Stubby' report, Winston is carrying on that good work. I've become more aware of all the plastic we use in our everyday life. You know all that plastic is made from oil, and we all remember the devastating effect oil had just one year ago. So why are we using all that plastic? I already use reusable bags when I go to the store (you know the kind, just like Dutch wore on his nose in Puglet's green video last year!), but I've got plastic containers, and plastic wrap, and plastic CD holders, and so many other places where plastic is being used. My goal is to cut down on the plastic I use, and the plastic I buy (and that includes all that extra packaging that is in nearly everything in stores these days, including that hard plastic wraps to prevent theft that cut your hands when you try to open them), So, what are you doing? What changes are you making? Earth Day and Easter, a weekend combination of renewal, rebirth and recommitment. And a time to smile and remember, too, with a picture of Rainy (now Lola) I received yesterday from her mom. Happy Easter and Happy Earth Day!

Birfdays and Hatch Days and New Pugs, Oh My!

Since I've been busy following the antics of Butler Blue II, there's been a lot going on in the bloggy world. Macaroni has joined the Smushie Ranch, little bitty Archie joined Melissa's family and is watched over by Angel Emmitt, Tiffy joined Michele's family and is being guided by Angel Stubby, today is Salinger's fourth Birfday (Dude!), and Gilbert's 10th Hatch Day. And just like spring brings in all that is new, the bloggy world is sprouting, and growing and flowering, bringing new life, new dreams, new hopes with every new day.

Keep It Going

I have some things I want to blog about, but for right now, I have to keep it going. What is "it"? Why it's Butler Basketball! And who's that cute pup? Why that's Blue II, the Butler mascot! Tomorrow night, for the second year in a row (!!) Butler is playing in the NCAA Finals. And for the second year in a row, there has been an exception made and Blue will be allowed courtside to support his team! Go Dawgs! And Go Blue II!

And Now For Something Completely Different!

It's been a rough start to 2011 so far. The bloggy world has lost two of its very special gentlepugs in Stubby and Emmitt, there's been tragedy in Japan that seems to be continuing, and crazy weather has been affecting so many parts of the country. So, I thought it was time for a different post, a more uplifting post, a positive post! Now how can anyone resist the face of Blue II (yep, that's the pup above). He's the mascot of the Butler Bulldogs, who won their first game vs. Old Dominion 60-58 in the NCAA Tournament. Blue is a fan who dreams big (look at the size of that bone he has!) though he's an underdog. He enjoys life, and yet knows the value of a well timed nap. Like Blue, we can all reach for the stars, dream as big as our imagination can take us, live life to the fullest and funnest!

Keeping Those in Japan in Our Thoughts

This morning I woke up to the news of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan. From the early news stories, it became evident that the damage and loss of life from the earthquake and the tsunami was going to be pretty bad. My first thoughts were of Hawaii, as I've got a friend who lives on Maui. Thankfully, Hawaii and the U.S. mainland suffered only minor damage. But in these next few days, maybe we can remember the people of Japan, who are going through so much, and have lost so much. And maybe we can also remember the words of President Obama: "Today’s events remind us of just how fragile life can be....I’m heartbroken by this tragedy. I think when you see what’s happening in Japan you are reminded that for all our differences in culture or language or religion, that ultimately humanity is one." And whether it is in Japan, Haiti, Christchurch, or tornado alley here in the U.S., we're reminded that tragedy can happen anywhere, to anyone. So maybe you can keep those suffering through this latest disaster in your thoughts just a little bit as you go through your regular weekend routine.

Remembering Emmitt

Another dear friend has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Emmitt was always such a happy pug and his mom, Melissa was just the same - always upbeat, always bringing a smile to everyone's face. For right now, the world is just a little bit lonelier than it was before now that Emmitt isn't here, but he'll always be in our hearts. And perhaps we can celebrate his life with some mini meatloafs, and for all you pups out there, maybe you can put on the sweater you may have that Emmitt's mom made, and remember a wonderful friend. Run free, Emmitt!

Valentine's Day

It was a year ago today that I surrendered Rainy, and I still miss her very much. I know in my heart I did the right thing and I know she's very happy with her family -- yeah, including the 'brothers' she likes to chew on, just a little nibble, I'm sure! I know that it wasn't Rainy, that it was me, that I wasn't ready. But I've learned so much from that short time with her that I know I will have a pup, not just now, but soon. After the snowpocalypse, which is mostly gone thanks to a couple days of warmer weather, after a major project that I hope will be done by the end of the month, after two major family trips in July and September, I'm hoping to start looking once again for a forever pup for me. I think my life will have settled down somewhat at that point, and I know I'll take what I've learned from Rainy and what I read from all the other dog blogs and be able to make the commitment to be a good dog mom. So Valentine's Day brings back memories of a day that started with a walk around the block and ended with so many tears, but in this year I have made a new start. So Valentine's Day is like a new beginning, a time to prepare and begin anew, watch that 20+inches of snow melt into puddles, watch the sun staying up in the sky longer and smiling down on us just a little bit stronger. Happy Valentine's Day, my friends, enjoy the possibilities!
